Winston-Salem NC, December 20, 2006- Members Credit Union (MCU) delivered a truck full of toys, valued nearly $1000, to children associated with Family Services’ Battered Women’s Shelter. The shelter, whose mission is to support women and children fleeing from abusive home situations, plans to hand out the gifts during their annual Christmas party.
“The families who escape from an abuser often leave with just the clothes on their back,” explained Alina Fhoy, Family Services Representative. “The clothes and items they receive at the shelter are the possessions that will get them through Christmas.”
The Family Services’ Battered Women’s Shelter provided over 5,600 nights of shelter to women and children in 2005, so the credit union figured the least they could do is help out for one very special night.
“There are so many children affected by domestic violence,” remarked Violet Rorie, MCU Loan Officer. “Hopefully the toys we have collected here will help ease their distress.”
The toy drive for the Forsyth Family Services’ Battered Women’s Shelter was not the only successful project completed this season. In addition to employees volunteering their own time at a local retirement home, several non-profit organizations received monetary donations from MCU branches located across North Carolina.
