Hickory, NC – Members Credit Union (MCU), sponsored the first Wig Walk in Hickory to benefit the Catawba CountyWig Bank. The event took place at the Henry Fork River Regional Recreational Park on Saturday, September 14th and brought in $6,840. One hundred percent of the Wig Walk’s proceeds will be given to the Catawba County Wig Bank, a cancer service center that provides new and gently used wigs and other head coverings, breast prostheses, and mastectomy bras to cancer patients for free. The Wig Bank also promotes support groups and special programs for cancer patients and survivors.
“We are fortunate to have wigs donated to the Wig Bank,” remarked Peggy Messick, Catawba County Wig Bank’s Chairperson, “The Wig Walk will help us pay the rent and keep the lights on at our Wig Bank.”
Money was raised during July, August and September through donations from Members CU members, walk registrations, and corporate sponsorships. This year’s corporate sponsors included Catawba Valley Medical Center, Frye Medical Center, Susan G. Komen of the Foothills, Newton Family Physicians, Jenkins Funeral Home, Perry Electric Company and Suddreth Masonry.
“Having a Wig Bank in our community is a valuable asset for cancer patients in Hickory,” Tina Watts, Oncology Nurse Navigator for Frye Regional Medical Center, told walk participants. “Thanks to your support here at the Wig Walk, the Wig Bank is able to continue to help more cancer patients and survivors right here in Catawba County.”
Watts was one of several representatives from Frye Medical Center who set up an informational table at the Wig Walk to promote the health services available at Frye. Catawba Valley Medical Center, Susan G. Komen of the Foothills and The Catawba Valley Wig Bank also had informational tables set up during the event. Other activities at the Wig Walk included Corn Hole, a Prize Wheel and a Wig Contest.
Members CU will continue to raise money for the Catawba County Wig Bank by selling Wig Walk T-shirts at their Hickory Branch, located on 2142 Springs Rd and at their Newton Branch located on 2475 Northwest Blvd.

The Wig Bank is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-6 p.m. and is located on 437 Main Ave SW in Hickory. Appointments are not required, but are appreciated. Individuals, businesses, foundations, and groups throughout our community donate most items offered by the Wig Bank. Volunteers make and provide many of the turbans and other head coverings.
