NCDOJ warns against scammers selling government documents

CONSUMER ALERT:
The North Carolina Department of Justice (NCDOJ) is warning residents about a new scam involving official-looking flyers that appear to be from the government. The flyers are urging recipients to purchase a copy of the deed to their property and include information about the property, a “Please Respond By” date, and a fee of $83.00. Record Transfer Services, the company behind the flyers, hopes unsuspecting recipients will see a fast-approaching date and quickly send a check or call to pay instead of reviewing the flyer closely.
To see an example of the flyer and to learn more about the scam, please visit the Carolinas Credit Union League website.
Please remember to always read the fine print when receiving official-looking documents in the mail and check with the NCDOJ Consumer Protection Division if you receive suspicious mailings. You can also file a complaint about a suspicious mailing over the phone toll-free at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or online: www.ncdoj.gov.
