Hickory, NC 9/13/2014 – On Saturday morning at the Henry Fork Regional Recreational Park in Hickory, 50 people participated in Members Credit Union’s second annual Wig Walk for Catawba County, raising $6,662. 100% of the proceeds from the charity walk will be donated to the Catawba County Wig Bank.
“Before Members Credit Union began coordinating the Wig Walk for the Wig Bank we considered closing our doors,” explained Peggy Messick, Catawba County Wig Bank’s Chairperson. “The Wig Walk has given us the funds needed to pay rent and utilities so that we can continue to provide services to cancer patients.”
The Catawba County Wig Bank is a cancer service center that provides new and gently used wigs, head coverings, breast prostheses, and mastectomy bras to cancer patients for free. The Wig Bank also promotes support groups and special programs for cancer patients and survivors.
“We are fortunate to have wigs donated to the Wig Bank,” remarked Messick, “And since the money from the Wig Walk pays the rent, we can order wigs and head coverings that meet the needs of more clients.”
Fundraising for the Wig Walk began in May and lasted during the summer with donations being collected from MCU members, MCU’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament, walk registrations, and corporate sponsorships. This year’s corporate sponsors included Catawba Valley Medical Center, Newton Family Physicians, Jenkins Funeral Home, and Suddreth Masonry. During the walk, participants received a 2014 Wig Walk T-shirt and were encouraged to wear a costume wig for a wig contest held after the walk. Twelve contestants participated and the winner was Doris Bolick from Hickory. Her prize was a $50 gift card from MCU.
The Wig Walk for Catawba County Wig Bank is one of two Wig Walks sponsored by MCU. The second event takes place in Lenoir for the Wig Bank of Caldwell County. To date, MCU’s Wig Walk events have raised $30, 922 for Wig Banks in Western North Carolina.

The Wig Bank is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and is located on 437 Main Ave SW in Hickory. Appointments are not required, but are appreciated. Individuals, businesses, foundations, and groups throughout our community donate most items offered by the Wig Bank. Volunteers make and provide many of the turbans and other head coverings.
