MCU Raises $1,584 for Tsuanami Relief

Winston-Salem, NC, February 11, 2005 – Members Credit Union (MCU) donated $1,584.37 to the Northwest North Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross today to assist in the cleanup of the weather-torn region affected last year. MCU members and employees raised the money throughout the credit union’s 14 branch network during a three week period in January.
“We had to do something,” reflected MCU’s Jack Braswell, MCU President/CEO. “To see the devastation on television and not feel the urge to help is to contradict the credit union credo of ‘People helping people.’”
MCU Employees Gayle Rynes, Collections, and Mindy Turner, teller at the Newton office, came up with the idea to place collection jars at each teller line to solicit donations. The response was overwhelming.
“Our membership amazes me,” Eric Stiff, MCU VP Marketing exclaims. “While layoffs and downsizing have hurt North Carolina workers’ wallets, our membership’s generosity has certainly not wavered.”
The American Red Cross will distribute the funds to international officially recognized Red Cross organizations. The money will then be spent on tsunami relief as they see fit.
