Morganton, NC, June 1, 2010- Members Credit Union’s (MCU) members and employees donated 231 pounds of nonperishable food for the Burke United Christian Ministries’ (BUCM) food pantry. The donations included much needed items such as canned fruit and canned meat which was the focus of the May food drive held at MCU’s branch located at 106 East Flemming Drive in Morganton.
“Canned fruit and meats are hard to come by and are more expensive then canned corn or beans,” explains Suzy Fitzgerald, Mission Opportunities Director at BUCM. “Ninety percent of the food in our pantry comes from donations and without contributions from organizations like Members Credit Union our food pantry wouldn’t exist.”
MCU’s food drive was inspired after Branch Manager, Jerry Byrd, read an ad in the Morganton News Herald about the shortage on canned fruits and meats at BUCM’s food pantry.
“We placed an ad announcing MCU’s food drive,” said Byrd. “Our members and the community were amazing and responded generously.”
The 231 pounds of food collected at MCU were delivered to BUCM on June first. According to Fitzgerald, “that is enough food to provide nearly six weeks worth of groceries for four families.”
BUCM is located on 305 B West Union Street in Morganton. Non perishable food items and personal essentials that are most needed by the food pantry include canned fruits, canned meat, tomato sauce, jelly, toilet paper, and paper towels.
